Yakima Skybox Pro

As I mentioned last month, one of the companies I met with at SIA was Yakima, and I talked to them mostly about their lineup of cargo carriers. I thought they had some cool new things and we talked about the possibility of Snow Hugger doing some reviews.
So on Wednesday a Yakima Skybox Pro 12 arrived. I expected it to be big, but I did not expect it to be eight feet long and delivered by a semi. Let’s just say that I would forgive the neighbors for wondering why I was taking delivery of a coffin.
I’ll be writing a series of posts thoroughly reviewing the SkyBox and, first and foremost, I hope it will give readers of this blog some valuable information. But I also hope that Yakima and their PR agency will find value in it because getting gear to review is going to be important to the life of Snow Hugger and all the Huggers. We will review products and services whether we pay for them or someone gives them to us, but receiving free stuff vastly increases the scope of what we can do. With this in mind, I think now is a good time to enunciate some editorial standards with regard to reviews so everyone knows how we will operate.
- Snow Hugger accepts free goods and services for possible testing and review. We may or may not make a promise to test/review—if you’re a reader and want to know if we made a promise in a particular case, just ask. If you’re a business with a product or service for us to test/review, let’s discuss it.
- We focus on real-life testing. That means we use things for real, over time the way we do with anything else and we write about our experiences over time. We don’t care what it’s like to use a piece of gear for a day, we care what it’s like to use it over months and years.
- We do not promise to give positive reviews. We do promise to base reviews on actually using an item in real life and to give our honest opinions. In our world, a positive review is when we have occasion to use an item over and over—and have cause to write about it over and over.
- We’re Huggers not haters. Overwhelmingly, our focus is on telling our readers what we find good, enjoyable, and valuable, not in flaming stuff we don’t like. Other blogs have that covered.
- We keep the stuff we’re given. We’ll let you know if that changes, but real life reviewing implies keeping and using stuff. Passing goods and services along to our bloggers is also the main economic benefit we can currently offer them, and we’re glad when we can do that for them.
- We’re commited to honesty and openness. For this thing to work, we must gain and keep an audience, and we know that ultimately depends on being legitimate and credible. If you can’t believe us, you won’t read our site, and the “gravy train” stops.
- We think that having fun, doing work we’re proud of, and suceeding financially is a high moral calling. That’s what motivates us, keeps us honest, and justifies our work. That’s what makes us Huggers.

I’ll be very interested to hear how you like the roof box. We’ve considered getting one for a while now because it would let us toss gear on the roof and leave room for people in the car without being cramped. More importantly, it allows us to bring the car-sick prone dog without running the risk of having her puke on the gear. :) My biggest hangup is having to store that monstrosity somewhere.
They did include a hanger bar to allow the box to be stored vertically on a wall. And, I think that will be convenient.
or just put puke-prone dog IN the box and not worry about it… =)
Boxes on subarus can be a pain… FYI
